Hello from Canopy!

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

Welcome to the Canopy blog, I thought it might be fun to document and write about our journey and adventures with tree climbing, the places we go and the people that we meet along the way.

Canopy was born through a career in Arboriculture. I have been running a small but successful tree surgery company in East Sussex and Kent since 2004. I had always enjoyed taking on new climbers and developing their skills. After 15 years in the industry I felt it was time to take a sideways step away from tree surgery. As the popularity of outdoor activities has increased over recent years we wondered if there was an opportunity to take more people tree climbing. Recreational tree climbing is very popular in America, however its not really taken off here yet in such a big way. There are various companies scattered across the UK who offer the activity but the scene is still in its infancy.

We live in East Sussex and have the most amazing countryside around us, I've been lucky enough to work in some amazing places whilst running the surgery firm. One of my aims with Canopy is to be able to take other people on tree climbing adventures in some of the most beautiful places our part of the world has to offer.

Canopy was started in 2018, we started taking friends climbing and working out the best way to get groups of people up into the trees. We then started to open up a few sessions to members of the public and have been steadily growing the business from there. We were just about to launch our Dunorlan Park Tree Climbing sessions in Tunbridge Wells for the first time but then Covid-19 came along and put stop to that for the time being (this is probably why I've started a blog as a proactive way to work on the business for a few months....)

Hopefully we can all get through this lock-down and emerge the other side with a positive outlook on life and embrace the future. Maybe we will appreciate the things we have taken for granted a little bit more, I know I will. It will be great to be able to go out and climb again whenever I like and with whoever I like.

In the mean time I'm going to seek out exciting places to take people climbing, try out some new kit, I have a goat willow tree in my garden which is just about big enough to climb... I will probably take the kids up there next week, maybe shoehorn it into some aspect of homeschooling.

Anyway keep safe out there and hopefully see you in the trees at some point soon(ish). Please like our Facebook page @canopyclimbing
